Summary:

Bridge and tunnel structures play an important role in the transportation network, offering significant economical and environmental advantages in social activities. However, in the long-term operation period, bridge and tunnel structures would suffer from environmental erosion and various disasters inevitably, resulting in degradation of structural performance and safety. Recognized from Transportation Security Administration, Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) provides solid support for maintenance decision making and operation safety guarantee of bridge and tunnel structures. In addition, intelligent sensing technology is the basis of SHM and also one of the most active research topics in the field of SHM. Meanwhile, massive accumulation of monitoring data, containing nearly all safety related information of bridge and tunnel structures, promote the progress of data analysis and mining algorithm. This special session aims to showcase recent hardware and software developments, related intelligent sensing technology, data analysis and safety evaluation methods, and actual field application examples related to Structural Health Monitoring in bridge and tunnel structures.
